I've my frustrating myself trying to achieve JUST the lined patterns that you have cut out from the numbers themselves. I believe that you used either the pathfinder palette or the clipping masking [I'm leaning more towards clipping mask], but what I'm trying to figure out, is how you were able to keep the rest of the number intact.

Unless you took an easier route, such as using the color used background color for the strips.

Any tips/pointers/advice would be much appreciated. Trying to create a similar feel for a number abstract design for a buddy of mine that wants to create an abstract t-shirt design.
